9 First Birthday Party Theme Ideas

Can you believe your baby is ONE!? It’s time to celebrate all those milestones and “firsts!” First birthday parties are always a fun way to celebrate your baby’s first year (and you surviving that first year as parents). The key to a good party is making your theme personal. What best represents your child over their first year of life? Here are some great themes with some fun elements to choose from!

Bee

It's Fun To Bee One

[Name]’s First Bee-Day

Think all things honey…black and yellow decorations and food. Think outside the box (or inside the honey jar). Grab a honeycomb-shaped smash cake for your little guest of honor and a larger one for your guests to indulge in.

Fun snacks might include honeycomb cereal, honeycomb cupcakes, black and white M&M’s. You could even add Winnie the Pooh touches because who loves honey more than Winnie the Pooh?!

Glitter

One Gold Year

All things glitter and shiny are welcome here. Decorate with streamers and all kinds of gold decorations. Gold cupcakes for the guests and a gold cake filled with edible, gold sprinkles for the baby’s smash cake (it’s their 1st birthday, cleanup is inevitable). How about a cute gold onesie for the special one-year-old?!

Donut

Donut Grow Up

One Is Sweet

Who doesn’t love donuts?! Donut balloons, donut wall, a donut-shaped smash cake. You can even find a cute donut onesie for your baby to wear.

Who’s up for a donut eating contest? Or maybe a contest for who can eat the most donut holes (better buy plenty). There are so many fun ways to spin a donut-themed first birthday party that everyone is sure to enjoy!

Mickey and Minnie Mouse

One and Fun

Mickey and Minnie are always fun options! There are so many cute Disney decorations that you can use to decorate for your party. Maybe even a cute onesie to dress your baby in. You can provide mickey ears for your guests to wear or give them away as party favors. A Mickey or Minnie shaped smash cake and balloons will add plenty of fun touches to your party.

Fish

Oh-Fish-ally One

Think everything fish related. You can decorate with fish and bobbers, fish balloons, fun fishing signs, and fishing poles. For food, some snacks could include Swedish Fish, goldfish crackers, and pretzel rods. You could even go the Dr. Seuss route and play off the One Fish, Two Fish, Red Fish, Blue Fish book title.

Camping

One Happy Camper

A campfire themed party is fun for all ages even if you're not in the woods! You can “roast” s’ mores (make ahead in the oven or microwave) and sit by a fire while watching the baby guest of honor smash their smash cake (bonus: outside will make clean up a snap). Remember to keep an eye on the little ones by the fire. Decorate with logs, camping tents (you could even put games in tents for kids to play in), and camping chairs. Serve fun camping food like hamburgers and hotdog – anything you would find at a campsite you could use for your party (minus the bears)!

Football

One Year Down

Why wait until the Big Game? Picture all things football-related…football balloons, flags, real footballs, etc. Have your guests wear their favorite football jersey and dress your baby in your favorite sports team onesie. Serve popcorn, hamburgers, hotdogs, chips, and fruit – anything you would find at a concession stand!

Animal

Wild One

Lions and tigers and bears, oh my! Anything animal-themed is perfect. Serve food on fun animal plates, have animal crackers as a treat, and decorate with animal-shaped balloons. The smash cake can be the shape of your baby’s favorite animal. You can also have your guests dress up as their favorite animal.

Fiesta

First Fiesta

Who is ready for a fiesta?! All the chips, salsa, and guac are welcome here! Decorate with sombreros, colorful streamers, and brightly-colored drinks (maybe even margaritas for the grownups). Serve your favorite Mexican food and have a cacti-shaped cake for the smash cake. Top it off with a fun pinata and send them home with maracas to remember the occasion.

First birthdays are worth celebrating! Grab your one-year-old, your closest friends, and celebrate a great first year of milestones and accomplishments with your baby!
